Cooking with the Stars

Here are some classic cooking scenes compiled by afrenchindublin on YouTube from the silver screen—literally, from black-and-white movies. My personal favorite are all the scenes from Sabrina (the original, not the weak 90s remake), where Audrey Hepburn learns to cook in France before she returns to a classic love triangle. It’s a bit long, but fun to see all these great kitchen moments in one place.

Mini Red-Velvet Cupcakes

BBQ season is upon us, so here’s something you can bring to the party. Cate makes these red velvet cupcakes look effortless. Because they are!

Roasted Red Pepper – Now We’re Cooking with Gas!

We’ve all had relationships go down in flames so why not channel some of that emotional energy into cooking with fire? A gas stove or grill are a great way to add extra flavor to red pepper, great for sandwiches, salads, or sides. It’s also a colorful addition to any meal, like boring chicken and mashed potatoes. Check out this video for the quick and easy how to.

Our Un-Valentine’s Day Party

Now that the holidays are over, it’s time to gear up for that other wonderful time of the year, Valentine’s Day. But even though you may be single, you don’t have to go it alone.

In the spirit of the Mad Hatter’s Un-Birthday Party, we threw an Un-Valentine’s Day Bash, complete with Queen of Hearts Cookies, Rose-Colored Cocktails and Quiche Tartlets (which are about as girly a dish as you’re going to get). So invite some pals over and celebrate the fact that February 15th is just around the corner.

Grandma’s Recipe: Spice Cake

by Cate Wells

We’re going Dutch today but not on a date. I just saw this fun silent movie from the Netherlands on how to make Spice Cake—too bad my cooking disasters are not nearly as cute or innocent as this video. I do think this recipe qualifies as Grandma-approved.

Rocco’s Risotto

By Heather Quinlan

Sometimes the single life can get me down, but luckily, I happen to live two blocks from a gorgeous Italian. That’ll snap you out of it real quick. Rocco’s also charming and sweet AND makes a risotto that’ll knock your socks off. It didn’t take much convincing to get him to share his tricks from the Old Country, which interestingly doesn’t involve ancient Roman secrets, but instead a good old-fashioned Cuisinart. Watch the maestro at work. I was glad I did. I’d never heard food described as “beautiful” so much before, but when we sat down to eat I could understand the sentiment. It was also a great way to get me to eat my veggies (hear that, Mama Mia?). Great Italian dinner made for me by a smoking hot Italian? In Italy you might say che bella, but my country that’s known as a win-win. Thank you, Breakup Cookbook!

Nonna Stella – Now THAT’s Italian!

by Heather Quinlan

Nothing is more comforting for a wounded heart than comfort food. And who offers more comfort than Granny? Or, as she’s known in Italy, La Nonna. My friend Rocco showed me this video yesterday. You’ll meet him soon when he makes his famous risotto, but in the meantime, watch Nonna Stella create this awesome eggplant dish. I don’t often use the words “awesome” and “eggplant” together, but damn, this looks good. Nonna Stella’s other videos are here—they’re all in Italian, but food is a universal language, so buon appetito!
